English as a Second Language (ESL)

The ESL (English as a Second Language) Program for ELLs (English Language Learners) is a language development and reinforcement program. The program's goal is to develop and/or improve ELL students' comprehension in listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. The ESL specialists work toward preparing the ELL student to function successfully with content area subjects in a general classroom environment.

ESL instruction correlates to the PA English Language Proficiency Standards and WIDA Can Do Descriptors. Students are instructed in Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing. These domains are addressed through language, literacy, and content-based instruction in the ESL classroom. Modifications and accommodations are also made in content classes based on an individual student’s level of English proficiency. Completion of the ESL program is based on the exit criteria set forth by the Pennsylvania Department of Education.
